Do poor driving behaviour stats = poor claims performance?

Organisations that run a fleet rarely compare fleet accident data with poor driving-behaviour alerts from a Telematics system.  In fact, one may ask whether those drivers who exceed acceleration, cornering and braking tolerances set by the black box really are the riskiest drivers?

After many years in the business, the data we collect through our DriverSure program shows no correlation between those drivers who have accidents and those with poor driving-behaviour stats.  As an analogy, you could say that a formula one racing driver would display the very worst driving behaviour index but is least likely to have an accident.

Fixed measuring systems over drivers with variable abilities (such as alertness, anticipation, eyesight, experience etc.) will cause capable drivers to be flagged up alongside those with whom we may need to intervene.

This is why, through DriverSure, we set  these alerts from telematics systems  alongside other gathered risk data to gain context and trigger a deeper investigation as to the causes.

In the end, it is important to prescribe tailored remedies, that avoid wasted investment and that drivers feel is more relevant to their needs. This is the key to longer-lasting safety messages and the gateway to reducing claim frequency.
