It won’t have escaped your notice that we are all experiencing risk management on a daily basis as we watch the 10 o’clock news and read the daily stats of vaccinations, hospitalisations, lockdown measures and best-practice advice.  As the Prime Minister was wrangling with the decision to delay the ‘freedom date’, the similarities of his position and our work at Driversure have become inescapable.

Consider the following two statements:

The Government ponders how serious the Covid threat might become by reference to infection rates and hospitalisations and then makes a judgement call about whether lockdowns, vaccines or mass testing represent the most appropriate tools to tackle the risk.

A Fleet ponders how much investment is required to ensure safe driving by profiling its drivers using assessment tools and driving behaviour stats and then makes a judgement call about what form of remedial action would be the most appropriate in the circumstances.

Risk management is now a part of our personal and professional lives.  If ever there was a case for managing fleet risk, now is that time.  All Fleets carry risks and these need to be identified, understood and acted upon.

As with the Pandemic, poor quality data that is either out-of-date, irrelevant or incomplete can lead to over-reactions where it’s not necessary and under-reactions where better solutions are needed.  A lack of timely synchronisation of data, communication, analysis and delayed reactions can increase risk and create more serious consequences.

The same consequences exist for fleets that ignore empirical evidence or choose remedial action that is inappropriate or too late.
