To reduce claim frequency, the first step is to gain a broad view of the risks drivers pose. Fleet Risk data is abundantly available in the current market, from several sources, but it could be from accident claims data that the most valuable clues can be found in the hunt for lower claim frequency. First, a risk-based Accident Management service will not only show if claims are rising or falling but also, which drivers have incurred the most expensive and most serious claims. Indeed, with a slightly more forensic approach at the FNOL stage, this service could also throw important light on why the accident occurred, so remedies can be tailored more accurately and earlier in the process. If claims data is unavailable, Fleet Risk programs are missing a key source of intelligence. The broader view that gives context to decision-making will be short on detail, which may result in wrong assumptions about who is causing risk. The knock-on effect is that money may be spent on the wrong remedies for the wrong drivers and claim frequency remains unaffected. Second, a claim service occurs after-the-fact and a Risk service occurs before-the-event, however, there’s the same amount of driver-contact and support required for both functions. An integrated accident and risk service would offer a “Personal Risk Coach” who can manage an accident as well as the Risk program. Finally, claims management is set to be influenced more by Risk Management in the future than at present as pressure to reduce claim frequency will drive greater scrutiny of claim causation and circumstances, as opposed to just liability and cost.
