During the eighteen-month battle to beat the pandemic, some people have stuck to the guidelines and continue to apply them enthusiastically and to the letter. At the same time, some people don’t feel the rules apply to them and proceed as if life carries no more risk than usual. Fortunately, most people tend to sit somewhere in between these two views.

In everyday life, such diverse approaches clash as different interpretations of risk cause conflict.

According to personal experience, something very similar is happening on our roads just now.  Prompted by frustration about being locked down, decision-making at the wheel seems to have taken a sudden turn for the worst.  Seemingly there is no patience left in society and for some, good manners have vanished.

The pressure to recover what we have lost during the business closure period, seems to be immense.  Money is generally short, employment circumstances are changing, resentment is being fuelled by negative news items and anger on social media seems to have been transferred to the roads.  During a painful and worrying time, this effect has an identifiable cause.

Therefore, it should not come as any surprise to see unexpected maneuvers on the roads, sudden changes of direction, excessive speeding and increased use of the horn. Accidents are happening and driving-risk is increasing.  So, what should we do?

First of all, it’s a question of spotting the signs. These are available within existing data streams from existing risk suppliers but, analysis and interpretation of the consolidated picture is important if we want accurate signs. Second, we need to investigate risk causation by asking questions of drivers sensitively and by being supportive.  Third, we must agree a plan of action.
